The university was a finalist for two prizes in British higher education – the 2009 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards for "University of the Year" and "Research Project of the Year".

Our origins can be traced to the early 1900 with the foundation of the former Bournemouth Municipal College.
Our modern history began in 1976 with the opening of the Dorset Institute of Higher Education.
